More about me and my work
Types of Therapy
There are a bunch of different ways that therapy works. I choose to work with a couple different modalities: emotion focused therapy, narrative therapy, solution focused therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and family systems therapy. These are all used integratively, depending on your needs.
Regardless of modality, all therapy with me is person centered, trauma informed, and culturally sensitive. My office is inclusive, and I do my best to make it a safe space for all who come.
Education/Work Experience
I have completed my Master of Psycho-Spiritual Studies and a Certificate of Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy at Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto in 2023.
I have also completed a practicum unit at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, where I focused on Addictions.
I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the CRPO, and am a member of the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals.
Focus
My passion lies with the many ways that our selves and our families are impacted by society, LGBT+ identities, trauma, violence, addictions, grief, and conflict. This shows up in ourselves in so many ways, such as codependency, guilt, shame, anger. Exploring these difficult emotions is a part of the process of healing them.
My work is in guiding clients to building authentic identities and lifestyles while maintaining healthy, respectful relationships.
Trauma
Many of us have experienced trauma in its different forms. It impacts us on all levels of our being and can be quite difficult to sort out. Trauma is far-reaching, and can include big events (“Big T Trauma”) and smaller events (“Little T Trauma”), can be complex or acute.
I provide an environment where trauma is understood, accepted, and explored at the level you are comfortable with.
Spirituality
Spirituality can be seen in all parts of our lives. It’s in what we are passionate about, how we connect with our communities, how we find meaning in life. It doesn’t have to do with attending church.
I have seen many stories of people who have struggled with religious or spiritual trauma. If that is you, please know that you are welcome here. Spiritual/religious trauma is very devastating and can wreck you to your very core.
If you find yourself struggling with any of these areas, please feel free to reach out to me and we can explore these areas further, while discovering the life you desire for yourself and how to achieve it.
Next Steps
Taking the time to look for a therapist you connect with is the first step to starting a difficult, slow but very rewarding journey to "leveling up” your life.
The best place to reach me is by email at jenniekoops.mvt@gmail.com. I typically respond within the next business day. I look forward to hearing from you!
